Explore the Vegan Food at Adelaide’s Non-Vegan Hotspots

Adelaide is known as one of Australia’s most vegan-friendly cities.  The ‘festival city’ celebrates its vegan food across a long list of all-vegan establishments. But you don’t have to be vegan to experience Adelaide’s impressive vegan food. Some of Adelaide’s top restaurants boast extensive vegan options that will please everyone. Here are some of the best that Adelaide has to offer.

Apoteca Bar & Restaurant

Apoteca Bar & Restaurant lies in a gorgeous heritage building in Adelaide’s West End. The name comes from the 142-year old mahogany pharmacy cabinets that furnish the space. Apoteca’s rustic atmosphere and extensively stocked award-winning bar sets the scene for an equally rustic Italian-inspired menu made from the freshest produce. Many menu items can be made vegan. Start with some small dishes from their ‘First Aid’ section; tasty chickpea fritters with Kalamata, thyme and salt with a side of marinated Sicilian olives. Extend the meal with share plates from grilled asparagus, zucchini salad and caperberry, to radicchio, fennel and orange salad, broccoli, oyster mushroom and mustard seed plus a serving of potatoes, garlic and rosemary.

Mimasu

Mimasu is a fresh and bright restaurant on the rim of Adelaide’s CBD. Mimasu is inspired by modern Japanese cuisine and culture with an emphasis on sharing dishes among friends. Japanese beer, sake, and whisky are on hand to partner each course. Many courses are automatically vegan or can be made vegan. Share some nibbles over a drink like lotus root chips before ordering larger plates. Miso roasted pumpkin with maple glaze and macadamias is one of Mimasu’s go-to dishes. Pair it with grilled broccolini in a sesame emulsion, crunchy soy morsels with vegan mayonnaise and steamed rice.

Soi.38

Soi.38 is an intimate and bustling restaurant in the heart of Adelaide’s festival precinct that serves sensual Thai flavours. The restaurant’s name gives a culinary nod to one of Bangkok’s famous street food street. Soi.38’s menu features flavours from Thailand’s culturally and historically rich remote regions. Recipes have been sourced from Thailand from historical records or local families. Guests are guided on the Thai region that each dish originates from and South Australian ingredients are used. Pan-fried chive cakes are a flavoursome starting point before diving into a bowl of jackfruit and tofu green curry with apple, eggplant and basil. To accompany the curry, choose green vegetables and salted soy beans, bowls of steamed rice and a veganised version of banana blossom salad with coconut, chilli jam and peanuts. To finish, try the vegan banana and coconut crème brûlée with cashew praline.

If you decide to travel to Adelaide and eat out, here are some extra helpful travel tips:

The above list of high-calibre, non-vegan restaurants proves that finding vegan options in Adelaide is super-easy. However, you still need to conduct your research and call ahead to ensure these (and other non-vegan) venues can cater for you successfully. Ensure you still ask the standard questions like:

  • What ingredients are used?
  • Is there the risk of cross-contamination with non-vegan ingredients?
  • Do you need to book in advance if the restaurant needs to prepare prior to your arrival?

Before you travel to Adelaide, you can even consider joining a social Adelaide-specific vegan Facebook group like Adelaide Vegans. This is a hyperlocal way to discover knowledge from other vegans who live in Adelaide and you can discover their experiences with specific venues. Local ‘word of mouth’ can be a vegan traveller’s best friend, especially when you travel to Australia’s most vegan-friendly cities.

The COVID-19 pandemic has forced many venues into temporary closure. Keep updated on new opening times and trading hours once businesses have re-opened.
