The May Edition of The Vegan View

This month’s edition of The Vegan View sees restaurants winning big in the vegan food stakes. Veganism is on the rise at a meteoric rate and the amount of restaurants showing enthusiasm for vegan dishes is overwhelming. We could almost say goodbye to the days of a vegan risotto or a vegan salad for stock-standard vegan options. This is where – I think – the rise of veganism will play out; restaurants doing innovative things with plants.

Michelin-star chef Alexis Gauthier Turns Restaurant 100% Vegan

Michelin-star chefs are movers and shakers when it comes to food. They can see the potential for new flavours and trends. Alexis Gauthier is one such chef who has turned his London brasserie Gauthier Soho 100% plant-based. According to Plant Based News, this has been a plan in the works for a few years now, but customers are not happy. Chefs go against the grain, and this is the perfect example.

Shannon Martinez’s New All-Vegan, All-Day Diner Flashes its Latin Flair

Closer to home here in Melbourne, Shannon Martinez of Smith & Daughters fame has now opened a new haunt according to Broadsheet. All-vegan Latin food features here, all day every day inside the new Ovolo hotel in Melbourne’s luxurious suburb of South Yarra. An all-vegan restaurant inside a hotel is another trail-blazing way veganism is reaching the masses.

Aunts et Uncles without the Meat

This was yet another great vegan restaurant story, found in The New Yorker, because it walks you through how couple Michael and Nicole turned vegan. As a result, their cooking expanded to make “lighter versions of the foods they grew up with”, using meat substitutes alongside grains, and vegetables. Think: flavours of the Caribbean without the heavy need for meat and animal products. If you ever find yourself in New York, look up their place called Aunts et Uncles.

See the Vegan Sights and Flavours of Iceland

Once borders are opened and you’re able to travel once you’re vaccinated, you might want to add Iceland to your list. To help you in your travels, Peaceful Dumpling has put together a regional guide to the icy isle with hot tips on where to dine vegan.

Drool-worthy Vegan Experiences Here at Home

Not only are restaurants getting in on the vegan action, so too are cooking experiences. Case in point is food experiences being hosted by Drool this month. You can learn how to make vegan-friendly pizza with Shop 225’s Head Pizzaiolo Edoardo on June 12 or have a delicious vegan fettuccine Carbonara experience with expert Vegan Italian Chef Nadia Fragnito on June 20. For another drool-worthy experience that will get the travel bug biting, then check out this vegan and gluten-free Sri Lankan street food cooking journey with MasterChef Contestant Dhayanie (Dee) Williams. This is happening on June 6.
