Travel and Eat Vegan along Sydney Road in Brunswick

Brunswick is the northern cousin of vegan Fitzroy. With its own personality and tramline, Brunswick beckons Melbourne’s vegans with the promise of great vegan food. Sydney Road is dotted with many spots for a vegan meal and vegan-friendly experiences. All courses are covered!

Here’s my pick of the bunch that won’t leave you hungry.

Run to Paradisescape for vegan Asian fusion food

Paradisescape is a fusion seasonal vegetarian restaurant where the bulk of options are vegan. Dine for a long lunch. This is where you find meals that are packed with flavour and made from organic ingredients.

Dine across all three courses that draw on a range of Asian cuisines. Think of meals like lemongrass stirfry and glazed eggplant. The menu rotates seasonally plus get freshly pressed juices that can emphasise the healthiness of your meal.

Paradisescape, 51 Sydney Road Brunswick Victoria 3056. Open Monday then and Thursday and Friday 11am to 9pm, Tuesday and Wednesday 5pm to 9pm, Saturday and Sunday 11am to 10pm.

Find Pub Food and Pub Trivia at The Cornish Arms

The Cornish Arms isn’t all-vegan, but they are famous for being vegan-friendly. Grab a table of mates together and have a lazy Sunday lunch before session of pub trivia.

The Cornish Arms are known for their separate vegan menu of vegan parmigianas, and other pub favourites like vegan burgers and chips, nachos and more. The drinks menu is extensive for vegans, too. One of my favourites is their pink lemonade.

Book a table in advance and arrive early before the trivia to get lunch first. Then, you can beat the rush. It’s free to do the trivia.

The Cornish Arms, 163A Sydney Road Brunswick Victoria 3056. Open 12 noon to 11pm Sunday to Thursday, 12 noon to 1am Saturday and Sunday.

Taste a vegan kebab and other Turkish treats at Kevabs

Another feature of Sydney Road is that it celebrates a multicultural side. What this area is also known for is Middle Eastern food. If you want an all-vegan Turkish experience, then go to Kevabs for a quick bite to eat.

The food-makers here create a vegan meat substitute for their kebabs and then load them with traditional kebab fillings – lettuce, tomato, sumac onion and a choice of sauces. You can also get vegan versions of house-made boreks (a savoury pastry filled with veganised meats, cheeses and veggies) plus Turkish sweets like Turkish Delight.

Kevabs, 89 Sydney Road Brunswick Victoria 3056. Open 12 noon to 8pm Tuesday to Saturday, closed Sunday and Monday.

Grab a love-filled lunch or coffee and cake at Gloria

What I love about Gloria is its inclusive space, colour and warmth. There’s retro furniture and loads of space to sit and chill. Gloria is mostly known for its decadent cakes, flans and slices, but their savoury options also satisfy as a wholesome lunch.

Savoury choices like savoury slice with a side of pumpkin salad or rice noodle salad is a generous plate for lunch. For sweets, be surprised by chocolate tarts, sponge cakes and Banoffe Pie. There are loads of hot and cold drinks available. The coffee is on point as well as the house-made chai.

Choices change daily so you’re surprised by choices when you arrive. Feel the love and follow their socials for the latest options available.

Gloria, 391 Sydney Road Brunswick Victoria 3056. Open 9am to 3pm Wednesday to Friday, 9am to 4pm Saturday and Sunday, closed Monday and Tuesday.

Sip herbal tea and eat brunch at Kale Mary

Kale Mary isn’t technically located on Sydney Road but it’s tucked away in a side-street within metres from it. Kale Mary is Melbourne’s latest all-vegan café which also calls on the freshest of organic ingredients. There are also some gluten-free options for those who need them.

Delight is a reimagined version of Gado Gado, a bowl of fresh cut root vegetables and lightly grilled tofu atop a tasty satay sauce and decorated with edible flowers. Or, choose a heartier plate of smashed chickpeas on thick toast and loaded with greens and rich tomato sauce. Partner these with a lemon ginger tea, a protein-packed smoothie or quintessential Melbourne soy latte.

Kale Mary, 207 Albert Street Brunswick Victoria 3052. Open 7.30am to 3pm Wednesday to Friday, 8am to 3pm Saturday and Sunday, closed Monday and Tuesday.
