Winter Holiday Tips for Melbourne

Australia has a reputation for being hot and arid. Yet Melbourne defies this reputation when the autumn and winter months arrive. Sure, it gets hot and steamy during summer but winter in the most liveable city in the world gets bitterly cold and wet. Despite the chills, there’s still fun to be found in this cosmopolitan city and visitors can harness it with a little know-how.

Dress accordingly
Brave Melbourne’s cold and be prepared for any weatherly changes by wearing layers. Think warm, long-sleeve tops together with toasty pull-overs, cardigans or jackets. Accessorise with fluffy scarves, gloves and cosy boots or sneakers. Stash a compact umbrella away in your bag too.

Head underground
Melbourne’s popular roof-top cinemas and bars come alive in summer yet hibernate during winter. Warm yourself with the best that Melbourne’s world-famous music scene has to offer. Check out the music talent in one of many live venues around town such as Cherry Bar in aptly named AC/DC Lane, The Corner in Richmond, Northcote Social Club in Northcote or The Espy in St Kilda.

Cook up a storm
Winter can bring on the hunger pains. On drizzly days, rustle up all those stews, soups and cakes you always wanted to try. Or, why not take on a cooking class? There are many schools around town such as Pip’s Cooking School in Moonee Ponds or Al Dente Cooking in the Yarra Valley.

Go regional
Winter is a great time to spend a weekend at a regional destination outside Melbourne. Unwind and experience regions boasting day spas, snowfields, wineries and quality local produce. The Orchard in Red Hill, Bed and Broccoli in the Goulburn Valley, The White House in Daylesford or Adara House B&B in Geelong are just a few luxury accommodation options.
