Cool Off this Veganuary in Melbourne with Gelato

Australia is one of the world’s biggest consumers of ice-cream. Luckily for Melburnians, this has influenced a surge in gelato destinations popping up around the city. Much of these gelato stops aren’t necessarily vegan, but they offer a suite of vegan flavours for vegan clientele. Veganuary also means its summertime in Australia so what better way to cool off than with a few scoops of delicious, icy gelato?

Gelato Messina at three locations around Melbourne

Whether it’s summer or winter in Melbourne, you’re sure to be queuing up to get a taste of Gelato Messina’s exquisite gourmet gelato flavours made onsite. When you do arrive at the counter, you’ll be met by some of the most unique gelato flavours in the city. All ingredients are made from scratch and the result is worth the wait. Pandan and Coconut, or classic Chocolate Sorbet, even Blood Orange are some of my go-to flavours. Seats are limited so be prepared to stand and consume your purchase. Three locations are found in the inner-city Melbourne area; stores can be found interstate in Queensland, Australian Capital Territory and New South Wales, too.

Fritz Gelato at various locations around Melbourne

Organic gelato and the beach naturally go hand-in-hand. After sunning and bathing yourself for the day at the beach in Lorne this summer, head to Fritz Gelato afterwards to cool down. If you can’t make the lengthy trip to Lorne, then you can still experience Fritz Gelato at any of the locations dotted around Melbourne. The vegan options, from Blueberry Buzz to Lychee and Lime, create a list of flavours to sample.

Miinot Gelato in Pascoe Vale South

Fresh natural flavours and ‘velvet smooth’ textures accentuate the artisan gelato found at Miinot Gelato. This is another locale where locals queue for the gelato goodness found here, and there’s standing room only.  You’ll find traditional flavours, yet the vegan options give rise to unexpected combinations – avocado and fig, mousse, and ‘gigi’. All flavours are made onsite, then smeared into cups with spatulas.

Lemon In Lemon Sorbet across locations around Melbourne

Going to a gelataria is part of the fun in vegan travel. What’s even more fun is the gelataria coming to you! Lemon In Lemon is an all vegan, all natural mobile gelato cart that frequents markets around Melbourne and regional areas. Creators of Lemon In Lemon Sorbet, Chris and Laura, started their business after falling in love with lemon sorbet during a trip to Italy. Now, they’re emulating these flavours for Melbourne vegans. What’s better is that Lemon In Lemon Sorbet can be hired for private events, too! Start with classic lemon flavour and then move to other exquisite flavours such as mandarin or pineapple and lime.
