High Street stetches across Northcote and Thornbury in Melbourne’s north-east. The strip is brimming with vegan food places as well as hotspots with loads of vegan options. So where should you go? Here’s a list of the best spots and you don’t have to travel far between them all.
Ballard’s in Thornbury
This is an all-vegan food and wine bar that serves casual tunes, quality drinks and homely food. The space is warm and intimate, the perfect setting for a toasty warm meal when the cold sets in. The menu rotates regularly, and bookings are essential. If you give them enough notice, they’ll even prepare your very own coeliac menu. Good times.

Woking Amazing at Welcome to Thornbury
Another vegan fave on High Street is Woking Amazing at the food truck and bar Welcome to Thornbury. Here you can find loads of vegan-friendly drinks at the bar, then head straight to Woking Amazing for all your all-vegan quick meals and snacks. There is a wide selection of comfort food like loaded fries, highly stacked burgers, salt and pepper ‘squid’, ‘duck’ pancakes and more.

Brother Bon in Northcote
Brother Bon is one of the main stayers on High Street. The business has been operating for over 20 years, more recently under the name Brother Bon. Lunch and dinner meals are inspired by Asian cuisines such as Taiwan, Vietnamese and Japanese. If you come for lunch or dinner, be sure to stay for gelato for dessert.

Shoku Iku in Northcote is now online
Shoku iku is a clean-eating vegan business that draws on raw and Japanese cooking techniques. When their cafe was open, you could find organic and nutritious meals, beverages, and tonics. Now, they have moved their cafe online and you can now purchase some of your favourites as multi-day programs to help cleanse and reset your body. Perfect for those times when your gut needs a reset. I think they still need a mention here, because they had such a presence when the cafe was open. Now you can still enjoy their flavours at home!
Tahina in Northcote
If you need some Middle Eastern flavours, then head to Tahina. While this is a vegetarian spot, you’ll find loads of vegan options on falafel and pita pockets, shakshuka, hummus or tahini plates, salads, and roasted eggplant. The cuisine here is inspired by Tel Aviv and the streets in Northcote.
