The Art of Kathakali from Southern India

Stages across Fort Kochi in southern India set the scene for an over 300-year old classical performance – Kathakali (Malayalam word for ‘story play’). The state of Kerala is from where this traditional art form has evolved.

Kathakali is an art form that was originally performed throughout the night and restricted to palaces, temples and religious festivals. Kathakali expresses epic stories found in Hindu and Indian mythology; stories of life, love and conflict told through a blend of dance with elements of opera, masque and pantomime.

I’ve been privileged to be invited to join the contributing writer team for Jummp.co which is a brand new source for everything travel. My very first article for Jummp exploring the art of Kathakali performance is now live here and ready for your eyes to explore too. Enjoy!
