The April Edition of The Vegan View

Like many editions, this month’s Vegan View covers the food side of things but it also covers what is happening in the wider space. New documentaries, sustainability news and the latest markets are all part of it. Let’s get into it!

Native Pest needs your help.

Director and narrator Ellen Burbidge is helping to create the new movie Native Pest along with Defend The Wild, which is scheduled for release later his year. Native Pest travels the path of the Australian dingo and chronicles the plight of this native animal. Some believe they are pests (and they are treated as such), while others not. The documentary aims to lift the lid on the argument and the plight of this endangered species.

The documentary makers need your help for crucial funding so that this important movie can be released. If you’d like to donate you can visit the Chuffed page that has been set up.

Townsville is awarded ECO Certified Destination status.

Townsville, on the north-eastern coast of Australia, has recently achieved an ECO Destination Certification. This means they are globally – and officially – recognised as a sustainable location. This is the nineth destination in Australia to achieve this.

While reports do not mention how vegan-friendly Townsville is, there are a few spots that are vegan-friendly in the Townsville area. Head to Happy Cow to see where they’re located.

Are Australians eating less fruit and veg? Apparently so.

A latest report released by the Australian Bureau of Statistics suggests Aussies are eating less fruit and vegetables. This was measured against Australian purchasing habits at supermarkets. Milk consumption went down, too. It is all coming down to food prices.

While Australia is one of the fastest-growing vegan markets in the world, we are consuming less fresh produce as a country. But when you look at the results further, we are consuming more potato chips, cereals, and convenience meals. It is a sad news day when the cost of living is forcing Australians into unhealthy eating habits, vegan or not.

Time Out releases its Best Restaurants for Vegetarians in Melbourne

Despite the cost of living, Melburnians are still finding cash to splash out on meals out on the town. Time Out’s latest list seems testament to this. There are some main stayers as well as the occasional surprise. If you have not tried any on the list, you might want to get out there before they get too popular.

‘Tis the season for vegan markets

This weekend in Melbourne, the Big Vegan market opened its doors and will do so again later in October. Next weekend is The Vegan Market at Fed Square. As the months roll on, I am sure there will be more vegan and vegan-friendly markets for you to enjoy.

Let them eat Vegan Chocolate Butterscotch Layer Cake

On a final – sweeter – note, there’s always time for a cake entry. Mindfood has brought the goods this month with their decadent Vegan Chocolate Butterscotch Layer Cake. By the looks of the ingredients, you may already have a few of them. Plus, there are always cheaper alternatives to find on special at your local supermarket or discount grocery store.
